Owner/Founder
Dr. Summer Heatly grew up in SW Oklahoma and developed an interest in veterinary medicine, and a strong passion for 4 legged creatures at a young age. She graduated from the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary medicine in 2009. She then completed a 1 year internship at Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Fl prior to returning to Oklahoma. Dr. Heatly then then joined a busy equine practice in central OK where she expanded her skills in equine medicine, surgery, sports medicine, and reproduction, along with being introduced to wildlife medicine and surgery, and still maintaining her knowledge of her smaller 4 legged friends. In January of 2015, Dr. Heatly founded Great Plains Veterinary Services, a full service, ambulatory, small animal and equine practice. Since that time, GPVS has expanded into a full service mixed animal, 2 doctor practice that resides in Arcadia, OK. Her goal was to develop a cutting edge mixed animal hospital, along with ambulatory services, that provide compassionate and progressive care for multiple species. In her free time, Dr. Heatly enjoys spending time with her husband Chad, maintaining their “funny farm”, mountain biking, trail riding, spending time with their families, live music, camping with their dogs, and escaping to the mountains when they can! “I am incredibly thankful for my clients, patients, amazing work team, family, friends, and everyone else who has supported and helped me develop this practice.” ~Dr. Heatly

She then moved to Oklahoma where she has been serving the equine community in the greater OKC area. Dr. Owen provides a wide array of services with particular interest in lameness, alternative medicine, and emergency care. She has been actively involved in the equine industry in various capacities for thirty plus years, which gives her a unique perspective into the various uses and disciplines of our equine partners. She resides with her horse trainer husband, Christopher Dennis, in Jones, OK. In her free time she enjoys showing her horses in the Ranch Events, garnering multiple World Championships in several different associations.

Dr. Steven Cholity was born in northern Illinois and has always been passionate about helping and taking care of animals for as long as he can remember. He spent most of his younger years on the racetrack working with Thoroughbreds as a groom and an exercise rider, as well as a trainer in the Midwest for over 8 years. Dr Cholity relocated to Oklahoma in the Fall of 2008 where he worked at Remington Park. Very shortly after he found himself becoming a police officer with the Oklahoma City police department. His passion for animals and the desire to become a veterinarian still lingered in his head where he finally went ahead and committed to the necessary schooling to become a DVM. Dr Cholity is a graduate of Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine and while in school, he found more interests than just horses. Dr Cholity became an enthusiast for small animal medicine and has been a client of Great Plains himself, prior to attending OSU. He enjoys both emergency & general practice, as it allows him to gain additional knowledge and skills with all types of animals, big & small. In his off time, Dr Cholity enjoys working on his farm and continuing to race and breed Thoroughbred racehorses. Dr Cholity has been with Great Plains since January of 2024 and has been incredibly grateful for the welcoming staff, as well as all of Dr. Heatly’s clientele. He is extremely happy to be part of the team and looks forward to what the future holds with the variety of case loads Great Plains encounters on a weekly basis.

Dr. Clairissa Maples was raised on a small farm in Southeastern OK. Growing up, she could always be found playing with her animals. She graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2016. Dr. Maples loves educating clients about the care needed for their pets as they progress through different life stages to ensure they live a long and healthy life with their family. She is especially fond of geriatric patients, which inspired her to pursue training in veterinary acupuncture as an alternative method of treating chronic and age related diseases. Dr. Maples also enjoys feline and canine internal medicine, surgery cases, and dental care. In her spare time, she likes to travel, spend time with her friends and German Shorthaired Pointer, Sally, and compete in local autocross events with her Mustang.
